Technical Alerts & Best Practices

Browser & Network Considerations

⇒ Web Browser (Guest Joining):
For best results, use a supported Chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome. Safari is not recommended for Guests at this time.

⇒ Streaming over WiFi:
Streaming over WiFi may result in degraded performance due to network variability. A hardwired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended.

VPN / Corporate Network Notice

⇒ Users on a VPN, proxy, or corporate firewall may experience issues with:

  • Password resets
  • New account activation

This is due to network restrictions, not the platform. Complete these actions outside the VPN if possible (e.g., use a mobile device on cellular or disconnect temporarily). More info: Remoto Playback Networking Guide.

Application Behavior & UI Constraints

⇒ Stream Settings While Streaming:
Stream Settings cannot be modified while a stream is active. To make changes, stop the stream, update settings, save, and then restart the stream.

⇒ Playback Application Left Open:
If Playback is left open for an extended period (for example, overnight or over a weekend), the app may become unresponsive. If this occurs, quit and reopen the application.

⇒ Signing In on Multiple Devices: If your account is already signed in on another device, Remoto will present an "Active Instance Detected" dialog when you sign in. Choose Full access to take over session control on this device, or Prep access to manage upcoming sessions while your other sign-in keeps running.

⇒ Minimum Application Window Size:
Playback Desktop has a minimum supported window size of 1600×900 pixels and is not responsive to a smaller size. If the app does not fit on your screen, adjust your display resolution in System Settings.
To adjust screen resolution:

  • mac:  Click the Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select your monitor and choose a scaled size from the thumbnail presets. For a precise list of dimensions, turn on "Show all resolutions" and then choose a resolution for that screen that is greater than 1600x900 pixels.
  • Windows 10: Right-click an empty space on your desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down to the Display resolution section and click the drop-down menu to select your desired resolution.
  • Windows 11: Right-click an empty space on your desktop, select Display settings, and scroll to the Scale & layout section. Next to Display resolution, select your preferred dimensions from the drop-down menu and click Keep changes to confirm.

⇒ Windows SmartScreen Warning (First-Time Installation): When installing Remoto Playback on Windows for the first time, Windows SmartScreen may display an "Unknown Publisher" warning. This is expected for new application certificates and does not indicate a security issue. Click More info, then Run anyway to proceed with installation. This warning will not appear on subsequent installs once the certificate builds reputation. (REMT-10730)

Audio Monitoring & Playback

⇒ Bluetooth Headphones:
Using Bluetooth headphones introduces inherent audio latency. This can be adjusted during a live stream using the A/V Sync controls.

Capture & Hardware Configuration

⇒ Capture Method Frame Rate Behavior on macOS:
On macOS, Screen Capture and Application Capture are subject to OS-level frame rate control. The effective frame rate may be variable, regardless of the frame rate selected in Playback settings.

For critical workflows, use Blackmagic or an NDI plug-in with constant bitrate support, as these methods bypass OS-level constraints by directly ingesting the source signal.

For non-critical workflows, where a small tolerance (approximately 5 percent) is acceptable, Screen Capture and Application Capture are suitable options.

Remoto Capture Agent (macOS)

See suggested system requirements for Organizer - Playback Desktop: Organizer/Streaming System Requirements.

New Features v1.9.0

Windows Platform Support

Remoto Playback is now available on Windows. Customers on Windows PCs can install and run the full Remoto Playback desktop application natively, bringing frame-accurate streaming and live conferencing capabilities to teams working across mixed operating system environments. Installation uses a standard Windows MSI installer with Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts, and the application follows the same interface and feature set available to macOS users.

Remoto Capture Agent (RCA)

Remoto Capture Agent is a new companion application that enables Organizers to stream from a remote machine while managing the review session from a separate local computer. The Capture Agent runs as a macOS system tray application and can be installed on dedicated studio workstations or capture nodes by authorized machine room technicians or rental houses before editorial systems are deployed. During session setup, Organizers select the desired Agent and authenticate access through Playback, enabling remote control of streaming without requiring direct access to the workstation hosting the media. This separation offloads heavy capture and encoding to dedicated hardware, improving conferencing smoothness and UI responsiveness on the Organizer's computer. Multiple Capture Agents can be registered per company, providing hot-spare, backup, and multi-source options.

Download the Remoto Capture Agent from remotopro.io.

Unified Streaming Service

Playback's streaming infrastructure has been rebuilt into a single, unified Remoto Streaming Service, replacing the previous mix of streaming backends with one consistent service. Native app participants (macOS, Windows, iOS, Apple TV) now receive full-quality SRT streams, while browser participants receive optimized WebRTC streams. The distinction between different viewer types is eliminated, so all guests get one consistent, high-quality experience regardless of how they join.

Multichannel audio (5.1, 7.1, 16-channel) is supported via the Opus codec for discrete routing, local decoding, and stereo fold-down as appropriate. On iOS, surround sessions are automatically folded down to stereo. On Apple TV, guests can select a stereo pair to listen to, with surround passthrough available when a compatible receiver is connected. The Desktop app supports full 16-channel discrete routing to specific output pairs. Web browsers do not support 16-channel audio; all guests of a mix greater than 7.1 surround must participate via native Playback applications.

Additional Content Sharing

In addition to the Main Stream, any Participant in a Playback session can now share their screen, a specific application window, or a browser tab in real time during video conferences. This is particularly useful during early creative development, when directors and cinematographers may want to share visual references, inspiration, or research while establishing the style and tone of a project with editors, mixers, and colorists. The Organizer controls who can share through an approval workflow, and screen sharing works on both the Remoto Playback desktop application and the browser-based Web client, so there is no need to switch to a separate tool.

Quick Session + Reuse Previous Session Settings

Setting up recurring sessions is now faster. A new Reuse button on the session dashboard lets Organizers clone settings and guest lists from any previous session with a single click. The Quick Session modal now offers two modes: New (from a preset) or From Previous (clone an existing session), with a summary panel showing exactly what will be copied before the session is created. A session picker lets users search recent sessions from the last 30 days, expandable to full session history.

User Profile Updates

The User Profile has been redesigned from the ground up, replacing the previous pop-up modal with a dedicated full-page layout. Account settings are now organized into clear sections, including Personal Information, Security/MFA, and Workspaces, making it easier and faster to manage individual account details, security settings, and team account access workspaces.

Tahoe Compatibility (macOS 26)

Remoto Playback is now fully compatible with macOS Tahoe (macOS 26). Customers upgrading to Apple's latest operating system will have full Playback functionality on day one, with no action required. This release removes the previous Tahoe compatibility warning from Playback 1.8.

Enhancements Available in v1.9.1

Sign In on a Second Device

The same Organizer account can now stay signed in on more than one device at the same time. When Remoto detects an active sign-in elsewhere, you choose how to continue on this device: Force Logout for full session control, or Be a Scheduler to manage upcoming sessions while your other sign-in keeps running. If you choose Force Logout, a confirmation dialog appears to confirm the takeover. Available on Desktop, Web, Mobile, and Apple TV.

Windows Support Enhancements

Playback 1.9.1 improves the Windows hosting experience with hardware-accelerated streaming. When an Organizer hosts from Playback Desktop on Windows, Remoto automatically uses the GPU to encode outbound video when a supported hardware encoder is present -- lowering CPU usage and improving stability on machines with capable GPUs. Supports NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, Direct3D 11, and Media Foundation. No setting to enable; software encoding remains the fallback when hardware is unavailable. Transparent to Guests.

User Profile Enhancements

Continued improvements to the User Profile introduced in 1.9.0, with expanded Account and Team Account functionality.

Bug Fixes & General Enhancements

Included in 1.9.2

Windows

NDI video input on Windows no longer stutters for Guests: Previously, when an Organizer on Windows configured NDI as the video input source and started a stream, Guests on both Playback Desktop and the Web client experienced video stuttering. The NDI-sourced stream now plays smoothly for all Guests. (REMT-10441)

Included in 1.9.1

Windows

Windows guest became unresponsive seconds after Organizer started streaming: Previously, Windows guests would freeze 2-5 seconds after the Organizer started the stream, requiring a force-close. This no longer occurs. (REMT-10257)

Windows organizer or guest crashed when clicking Voice Call in Studio: Clicking the Voice Call button in the Studio UI drawer during an active session caused the application to crash on Windows. The Voice Call drawer now opens correctly without crashing. (REMT-10561)

Windows guest crashed on session entry: Windows guests could experience a crash immediately when entering a session due to a memory issue in the video chat component. Session entry now works reliably on Windows. (REMT-10298)

Windows organizer crashed before entering a session room: On some Windows machines, the application crashed before the Organizer could enter the session room. This crash has been resolved. (REMT-10414)

"Entry Point Not Found" error on first launch (Windows): Some Windows machines displayed a d3dcompiler_47.dll error when launching Playback for the first time. The application now launches without this error. (REMT-10155)

Stream Settings dialog failed to open on Windows: Stream Settings would not open on Windows due to a missing component. The dialog now opens correctly. (REMT-9948)

Video call pagination missing on Windows for sessions with more than six participants: Windows users could not see pagination controls in the video call gallery when more than six participants were present. Pagination now appears correctly on Windows. (REMT-10366)

Multichannel audio layout only showed Stereo on Windows with virtual audio devices: When using a virtual audio device as audio input on Windows, the channel layout dropdown only displayed Stereo. All supported channel layouts now appear correctly. (REMT-10584)

General (Windows and macOS)

Annotation position was misaligned between Studio and Full Screen views: On-screen annotations drawn by one participant could appear in the wrong position for other participants viewing in a different mode (Studio vs. Full Screen). Annotations are now aligned consistently across all view modes. (REMT-9171)

Quick Session "Reuse" guest list did not show older sessions: The session picker in the Reuse flow only displayed recent sessions. It now correctly shows older sessions from the full session history. (REMT-10301)

Quick Session Preview button became permanently disabled after use: After closing the Preview modal in Quick Session, the Preview button would remain disabled with a "Session data not available" tooltip. The button now re-enables correctly after closing the preview. (REMT-10341)

Quick Session Preview modal close button stopped working: Clicking outside the Quick Session Preview modal could close the parent Quick Session modal in the background, leaving the Preview modal stuck open. Modals now layer correctly. (REMT-10342)

Web Joining

Screen share did not start on first Organizer approval (Web): When a browser participant requested to share their screen and the Organizer approved, the "Choose what to share" modal would reappear instead of starting the share. Screen sharing now begins immediately after approval. (REMT-10716)

Remoto Capture Agent

Capture Agent session could not start when Playback host lacked the agent's audio input device: If the Organizer's Playback machine did not have the same audio input device connected to the Capture Agent, the session failed to start. Playback now correctly delegates audio configuration to the Capture Agent. (REMT-10689)

RCA stream failed immediately on start with livesync error: In some configurations, starting a stream through the Remoto Capture Agent would immediately fail with an internal data stream error. Streams now start reliably. (REMT-10255)

Creating or updating a session failed after purchasing a One-Time Session from the Store: Immediately after purchasing an OTS, attempting to create or update a session produced an error until the user signed out and back in. Sessions can now be created immediately after purchase without re-login. (REMT-10519)

Included in 1.9.0

Audio device list now updates dynamically on macOS: Previously, connecting or disconnecting audio devices while Playback Desktop was open on macOS did not refresh the available device list. New devices would not appear in Preferences or Studio view until Preferences was closed and reopened, or the application was fully restarted. The device list now refreshes automatically when audio devices are connected or disconnected. (REMT-8400)

Known Issues

Playback for Windows

Critical

Application becomes unresponsive when starting a stream on Windows 10: On Windows 10, clicking Start Streaming causes the application to freeze and enter a "Not Responding" state. The app never recovers and must be force-closed via Task Manager. This issue is 100 percent reproducible. Workaround: None at this time. Force-close the application via Task Manager and relaunch. (REMT-10156)

Application becomes unresponsive on Windows during an active session: While connected as a Guest on Windows, the application may become completely unresponsive after sustained interaction with the session UI. This affects both Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Windows 11 hanging more quickly. Once unresponsive, the app does not recover. Workaround: Force-close and relaunch the application. (REMT-10239)

Studio view may appear blank on some Windows configurations: On certain Windows machines, the Studio view may render as a blank screen due to a graphics compatibility issue. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-9815)

Non-Critical

Guest on Windows sees black camera previews for other participants: When a Guest joins a session from a Windows machine, camera previews for other Guests may render as a black frame. Other participants (on macOS or other platforms) can see each other normally. The issue only affects the Windows Guest's view. Workaround: Ask each affected participant to turn their camera off and then back on. The Windows Guest will then begin receiving their video correctly. (REMT-10234)

Camera preview remains blank in Preferences after selecting a camera device (Windows only): On Playback Desktop for Windows, selecting a camera device in Preferences may not display a live preview. The camera tile remains blank despite the device being selected. Camera functionality during sessions is unaffected. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-10365)

Playback for macOS

Critical

Passwordless session email links sign out logged-in users: When a user is already signed in to the Playback Desktop app and clicks an email link to join a Passwordless session, the app silently signs the user out and does not join the session. No error or message is shown. Workaround: Fully quit the app or sign out before clicking the session invite link. (REMT-7860)

No notification or recovery dialog when video source is lost during streaming: When an Organizer is actively streaming and the video source becomes unavailable (for example, the source application is closed or crashes), the video feed freezes but no error message or notification is displayed. The Organizer only discovers the issue when stopping and attempting to restart the stream. Workaround: Stop the stream, open Stream Settings, select a new video source, save, and restart the stream. (REMT-9036)

Non-Critical

Participant List shows incorrect Stream Audio status for Guests: When a Guest disables Stream Audio, the Organizer's Participants tab may still show Stream Audio as enabled for that Guest. This is a display issue only and does not reflect the Guest's actual setting. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-8052)

Guest camera shows no video after enabling it in Studio when "Start with Camera On" was set to off: If a Guest joins a session with Start with Camera On set to OFF and then turns on their camera from the Studio screen, the camera tile remains in a placeholder state with no live video displayed. This affects both the Guest and Organizer views. Workaround: Switch to a different camera in the camera selector and then switch back. The camera will then render correctly. (REMT-10314)

Remoto Capture Agent (macOS only)

Non-Critical

"Quit & Reopen" button does not restart the application: In Remoto Capture Agent, after updating macOS permissions and clicking Quit & Reopen, the RCA application remains open instead of quitting and relaunching. Workaround: Manually quit and relaunch the RCA application. (REMT-10315)
