How to Stream Audio and Video to Remoto Playback Using NDI
Learn how to use NDI Scan Converter as a Playback video streaming source.
Table of Contents
NDI provides a flexible way to capture your screen, application windows, or supported editing software and send that signal into Remoto Playback for high quality remote monitoring. This guide covers the recommended workflows on macOS, including setup steps, compatibility notes, and troubleshooting tips.
Before You Begin: Technical Notes
Please review the following important considerations before setting up an NDI workflow with Remoto Playback.
Mute Audio in NDI Scan Converter
When using NDI Scan Converter as the video streaming source, make sure that audio is muted in the NDI application.
Go to: NDI Scan Converter Settings > Mute Audio.

Playback will receive audio separately through your chosen audio device. If audio is not muted in NDI, the system audio will be sent twice, which can cause echo or feedback. This is especially important when streaming from applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and other editing tools.
Avoid Using NDI Over Wi-Fi
NDI is not reliable over Wi-Fi. Many Wi-Fi routers do not handle multicast discovery or sustained NDI traffic well, which can lead to stalling or dropped frames.
For the best results:
- Perform both NDI capture and Playback streaming on the same computer
- Use a wired network connection when streaming between two computers
- Avoid Wi-Fi only connections for NDI traffic
If you must stream from a different computer, we recommend using a dedicated VLAN or subnet that supports NDI traffic. Using NDI across two machines connected only by Wi-Fi is not supported and will likely cause stuttering or video stalls inside Remoto.
Requirements
- macOS 12 or later
- Remoto Playback Desktop installed
- NDI Tools installed from ndi.video
- A supported NDI source such as Scan Converter, the Premiere Pro NDI plugin, Studio Monitor, or an NDI hardware device
Workflow 1: Stream from Any Application Using NDI Scan Converter
This is the most reliable and universal method for streaming video into Remoto Playback. It works with nearly any application, including editing software, web browsers, presentation tools, and media players.
Step 1. Launch NDI Scan Converter
Open NDI Scan Converter from Applications or Spotlight.
An NDI icon will appear in the macOS menu bar.
Step 2. Select What to Capture
Click the NDI menu bar icon and choose one of the following:
- Capture Screen
- Capture Application
- Capture Window
For editing software such as Premiere or Final Cut, select the specific Preview or Program window to avoid capturing unwanted interface elements.
Step 3. Allow Screen Recording Permissions
If prompted, go to:
System Settings → Privacy and Security → Screen Recording
Enable NDI Scan Converter.
Step 4. Select the NDI Source in Remoto Playback
In Playback:
- Open the Stream Settings panel
- Set Input Type to NDI
- Choose the NDI source that matches your computer name or the capture target
Your selected window or application will now appear in Playback.
Workflow 2: Stream Directly from Adobe Premiere Pro Using the NDI Premiere Plugin
The NDI Premiere Pro plugin provides a native NDI output from the Program Monitor through Mercury Transmit. This method does not rely on Scan Converter, and Premiere Pro will not appear in macOS NDI Output settings. This behavior is normal.
Step 1. Confirm the Plugin Is Installed
In Finder, navigate to:
Applications → Adobe Premiere Pro → Right-click → Show Package Contents
Contents → Plug-ins → Common
Look for the file named NewTek_NDI.prm.
If the file is missing, reinstall the NDI Tools bundle or download the plugin directly from ndi.video.
If Premiere Pro has recently been updated, a newer plugin version may be required.
Step 2. Enable Mercury Transmit
In Premiere:
- Open Preferences
- Select Playback
- Enable Mercury Transmit
- Choose the device labeled “NDI Output” or “NewTek NDI”
If you only see “macOS AV Output,” the NDI plugin is not active.
Step 3. Keep the Program Monitor Visible
The plugin transmits the content displayed in the Program Monitor.
If the Program Monitor is minimized, hidden behind other windows, or covered, the NDI output will be blank.
Step 4. Select the Premiere NDI Output in Remoto Playback
In Playback:
- Open Stream Settings
- Set Input Type to NDI
- Choose the NDI source corresponding to Premiere Pro
Workflow 3: Using Other NDI Sources
Remoto Playback can receive NDI streams from a variety of tools and devices, including:
- NDI Studio Monitor
- NDI Test Patterns
- NDI hardware encoders
- Other NDI-enabled applications
Any valid NDI source detected on your network will appear in Playback’s NDI source list.
Troubleshooting
Only “macOS AV Output” appears in Playback
This is not an NDI source. Premiere Pro has not loaded the NDI plugin, or the application does not support NDI output directly. Confirm that the plugin is installed or use Scan Converter instead.
The Premiere NDI device does not appear in Preferences
Verify that NewTek_NDI.prm exists in the Plug-ins folder and that your version of Premiere Pro is compatible with the plugin.
The NDI feed is blank or frozen
Make sure the captured window or Program Monitor is fully visible and unobstructed.
If using Wi-Fi, switch to a wired connection or run both NDI and Playback on the same machine.
Audio is missing or doubled
If using Scan Converter, confirm that audio is muted in its settings.
In Premiere, verify that Mercury Transmit is sending both video and audio to the NDI device.
