Playback for TV is the Apple TV app (Playback for TV on the App Store) that lets Guests join Playback sessions and watch the live stream on a television or projector.

Overview

Guests may join sessions using Playback Desktop, a supported web browser, Playback Mobile (iOS), or Playback for Apple TV, depending on how the session is configured.

Playback for Apple TV is optimized for large-screen Guest viewing in conference rooms and screening rooms. It supports:

• Accessing the dashboard listing past and upcoming sessions
• Joining sessions to review content in real time
• Stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 audio monitoring, with surround passthrough to a connected receiver or soundbar when the session format and hardware support it
• Viewing content at the maximum resolution your Apple TV and network support (H.265 when available)
• Selecting which stereo pair to monitor from multichannel sessions (including up to 16 channels on native streams; default: channels 1+2)
• Viewing who is in the session from the participants drawer
• Watermark / IP identity overlay when the Organizer enables it for the session

Playback for Apple TV does not support video chat, text chat, on-screen annotations, timecoded markers, screen sharing, or talkback / push-to-talk. Annotations made by Desktop, Web, or iOS participants are not visible on Apple TV.

System requirements

• Device: Apple TV (4th generation or later; Arm64)
• Software: tvOS 15.1 or later (latest supported version recommended)
• Account: Active Remoto account
• Network: Stable connection suitable for live streaming (wired Ethernet recommended when available)

Install and sign in

1. On your Apple TV, open the App Store and search for Playback for TV, or open the App Store link above from another device and install to your Apple TV.
2. Launch Playback for TV.
3. Sign in with your Remoto email and password.
4. Complete any account challenges if prompted (accept terms, set your full name, change password, or sign out other devices).

Use the Siri Remote to move focus between fields and buttons. Enter text with the on-screen keyboard or a paired Bluetooth keyboard if you use one.

Browse sessions

After sign-in, the session dashboard shows sessions available to your account in a TV-friendly grid.

Joining a session on Apple TV

1. From the dashboard, focus the session you want and select it to request to join.
2. Wait in the waiting room until the Organizer admits you. You can leave from the waiting room if you need to cancel.
3. After admission, Playback for TV opens full-screen streaming for that session.
4. If you leave and re-open the app while still connected to an active session, use Return on the active-session banner to go back to playback, or Leave to exit the session.

Sessions configured as Desktop Only cannot be joined from Apple TV. Guests should use a session streaming type that allows native clients (for example Desktop & Web), consistent with other Guest platforms.

16-channel sessions require a native client (Desktop, iOS, or Apple TV). Browser joining is not available for 16-channel layouts—Apple TV is a supported option for those sessions.

In-session experience

• Full-screen playback: Press a Siri Remote button to show on-screen controls; controls auto-hide after a short period of inactivity while the stream is active.
• Stream resilience: The app reconnects and retries when the stream drops, and restores playback when returning from the background when possible.
• Participants: Open the participants drawer to see who is in the session and their role/status. Participant lists update in real time.
• Multichannel audio (5.1 / 7.1): When a surround-capable receiver or soundbar is connected and supported, Apple TV can pass surround through. Otherwise, the mix folds down to stereo for monitoring.
• 16-channel sessions: Select which stereo pair to monitor (default: channels 1+2). Pair selection can be changed while watching.
• Watermark: If the Organizer enables watermark / IP identity overlay for the session, it appears on the TV picture.
• Leave session: Use the on-screen leave control when controls are visible, or leave from the dashboard active-session banner.

What Apple TV does not include

Playback for TV is viewing-focused. The following are not available in the current Apple TV app:

• Talkback / push-to-talk
• Camera and video chat
• Text chat
• On-screen annotations (including viewing annotations from other platforms)
• Timecoded markers
• Screen sharing
• Hosting or scheduling sessions (use Playback Desktop)

Best practices

• Prefer a wired Ethernet connection to the Apple TV when possible; stable Wi‑Fi is acceptable for many sessions but quality varies with network conditions.
• For surround review, connect Apple TV to a compatible AV receiver or soundbar and confirm the session audio layout is 5.1 or 7.1.
• For 16-channel monitoring, choose the stereo pair that matches the stems you need to hear; use Playback Desktop when you need full discrete routing to multiple outputs.
• Keep the Apple TV awake and the app in the foreground during critical reviews so the stream can recover cleanly if the network briefly drops.
• Use a large display or projector in a quiet room so Guests can focus on picture and sound without relying on in-app chat.
