If you hear your own voice when joining a Playback session, this is almost always caused by audio device routing overlap. This issue can occur for Organizers or Guests.

What causes this issue

Microphone “doubling” happens when audio output is accidentally routed back into a microphone input. This creates a feedback loop where microphone audio is sent back to the user or into the stream.

Common causes include:

  • A microphone input is set to the same device as an audio output
  • The same Virtual Audio Device is used for both input and output
  • On the Organizer system, microphone input and stream input are set to the same device
  • A Guest has routed their conference output into their microphone input

Required audio configuration (applies to all users)

For all participants in the session, including the Organizer:

  • Your microphone input must not match any audio output
  • Do not use the same Virtual Audio Device for both input and output
  • Outputs should never feed back into the microphone input

For the Organizer system specifically:

  • The microphone input and stream input must not match each other
  • Neither input should be set to a device that the stream or conference call audio is being sent to

If these devices overlap, microphone audio can be routed into the stream or conference call, resulting in echo or hearing yourself.

How to quickly identify the source

  • If you hear yourself when you are alone in the session, the stream input and microphone input are likely set to the same device
  • If you hear yourself only when other participants are present, one of the Guests may have their conference output routed into their microphone input

How to resolve the issue

  1. Check your audio input and output device selections
  2. Ensure microphone input does not match any output device
  3. Verify that Virtual Audio Devices are not reused for both input and output
  4. Ask other participants to verify their audio routing if the issue only occurs when Guests are present

Once audio devices are correctly separated, the microphone feedback should stop immediately.
